Tarnation

Jonathon Caouette created a very powerful and intense documentary that touched on a lot of issues. He used fast editing, lighting techniques and music at times to create intense scenes that were pretty scary. For example, when he tells us that his grandparents used shock therapy on his mother, there are dozens of cuts with skeleton looking faces with loud scary noises. It is pretty obvious that Jonathon is against shock therapy and depressant medicine, as he tries to paint a horrifying picture of it, and tells his grandfather near the end of the movie that the it is the reason that his mother is so crazy. Most of this documentary shows us how messed up Jonathon's mother's upbringing and life was and how that in turn, messed up Jonathon's life. Although Jonathon mentions that he has always been gay, he also mentions in one scene that it might have something to do with the fact that he was molested as a boy. So...I am not sure if he is implying that he was born gay or turned gay, but besides the fact, he shows us that he and his mother experienced terrible things that have had a huge negative impact on his life.
After watching this documentary, it is clear that one's upbringing directly influences their path in life and that good parenting is needed, rather than drugs and shock treatment.
